What is Prophecy?
- A prophecy is a divine revelation from God. It confronts sin, rebukes sin, and comforts.
How do we prophecy?
- God pours His Spirit on His children and through this Spirit, God reveals things to us. (see Joel 2:28, Acts 2:17)
-Purpose & Sign of True Prophecy: To Glorify and Edify God. (God has to be glorified!)
-Common Misconception: Prophecy can be for today or tomorrow. It isn’t necessarily just for the future, but is in continuity.
What is a Prophet?
- A prophet is someone who carries God’s heart in their hand. They hear from God & share the revelations they receive from God.
He said, “Listen to my words: “When there is a prophet among you, I, the LORD, reveal myself to them in visions, I speak to them in dreams.
God speaks to His prophets and prophets hear from God! The highest title for a prophet is a servant. They should never call themselves a prophet. Others may call them a prophet.
Prophecy is a gift; Anyone can prophecy, but not everyone is a prophet.
True Prophecy brings edification, encouragement, and comfort. It is always for the glory of God.
2 Samuel 12 – reference
Prophecy comes right after a word of knowledge.
Word of knowledge, discernment, and words of wisdom are all revelation of God. But not every revelation is a prophecy!
Revelation is the presence of God!
In the Old Testament, prophets were never called prophets. They were called Seers.
*Seer = Prophet; Overseer = Bishop*
True prophecy reveals the heart of God. False prophecy reveals the heart of man!
The Office of a Prophet is a lifestyle! It comes with an incredible sense of responsibility. Prophets hold the heart of God in their hand! They are very responsible with the words they are given and they share them to expose sin and bring hearts to God.
Our motivation for giving a prophecy has to be right with God. We cannot give true prophecies from the flesh or a bitter heart.
Characteristics of the Office of a Prophet
- Humility: A Man or Woman of God who doesn’t look for recognition or worldly reward.
- Burden: Before judgement they have compassion for people. A prophet cares deeply for people and the situations for the world. They have a righteous anger against sin.
- Prayer Warrior: They need a strong prayer life. A Prophet abides in the presence of the Lord 24/7.
- Kingdom Focused: Someone who isn’t looking around or has earthly desires. They seek God’s righteousness.
These are witchcraft and those who operate in giving false prophecies are witches. Test the spirits! We need to have discernment when we receive a word from others!
Father God, I thank you for your gift of prophecy. I receive this gift humbly through your Holy Spirit who lives inside of me. Spirit of Truth, reveal God’s mysteries to my heart. Give me a Spirit of Wisdom and Discernment, Lord, so that I would give and receive only those words which are of my Heavenly Father. Help me to speak and live in your Truth.
I repent from believing or coming into agreement with any false prophecies spoken over me in the past. I put the blood of Jesus Christ between me and these lies. I only receive your truth, Lord Jesus. I accept every good and perfect gift you have for me and only your plans, Lord.
Cleanse me completely of any ties I may have with occult practices, divination, horoscopes, astrology, Satanism, or Spiritism practices. I am a child of the Most High God and I operate only in Your Holy Truth from this day forward in Jesus’ mighty name. Amen.
