 You need this!

Fasting is not an easy practice and unfortunately, is not common in the Christian world today. Jesus fasted for forty days, which should indicate to us, its importance and demonstrates the example of Jesus that we should follow. I am going to offer some valuable tips and encouragement that will hopefully change your outlook and interest in fasting and help enable you to include fasting more easily in your life.

It is imperative that you remember that fasting is a sacrifice. It is not meant to be easy. It is putting your flesh to death and telling God I love you more than food. We can rejoice though, because fasting has a bondage breaking power in Jesus name. God moves your mountains while you surrender to Him and physically become weak. He will be your strength. Time and time again, there are numerous testimonies on healing and deliverance as a result of fasting. You can have a testimony too!

We believe there to be 3 main types of fasting found in the Bible.  We have added scriptures to support them and included a 4th type of fast to reflect our present time.  You can follow along and select which type of fast will work best for you at this time.

1) Absolute Fast: This can be used in an emergency situation. It provides great Deliverance for a life or death situation.  If you have a huge dilemma or a nation is facing a terrible situation, much breakthrough can be seen via the Absolute fast.  Also, you can fast individually or corporately with this type.

It includes a 3 day fast without food or water. We see this type of fast in the Book of Esther. Queen Ester called the entire nation of Israel to fast for their deliverance. I have never fasted without water more than a day. I would suggest that without consulting your doctor and ultimately the Holy Spirit, do not deprive your body from water. It is amazing how long a human body can stand without food, but not without water. However, if God is calling you to this kind of fast, always follow His leading first.

As seen below in the scriptures, Queen Esther called her people to fast for 3 days without water and food. Also, Jonah fast in the same manner.

Esther 4:16

“Then Esther sent this reply to Mordecai: “Go, gather together all the Jews who are in Susa, and fast for me. Do not eat or drink for three days, night or day. I and my attendants will fast as you do. When this is done, I will go to the king, even though it is against the law. And if I perish, I perish.””

Jonah 3:6-10

“When Jonah’s warning reached the king of Nineveh, he rose from his throne, took off his royal robes, covered himself with sackcloth and sat down in the dust. This is the proclamation he issued in Nineveh: “By the decree of the king and his nobles: Do not let people or animals, herds or flocks, taste anything; do not let them eat or drink. But let people and animals be covered with sackcloth. Let everyone call urgently on God. Let them give up their evil ways and their violence. Who knows? God may yet relent and with compassion turn from his fierce anger so that we will not perish.” When God saw what they did and how they turned from their evil ways, he relented and did not bring on them the destruction he had threatened.”

2) Supernatural Fast: A Commissioning Fast. This type of fasting is known for Ordination or commissioning for a higher ministry or a Divine task.  This fast also includes fasting without water or food, liked the Absolute Fast, however, it is for a total of 40 days. Moses fasted two times for forty days without food and water. He took the Ark of the Covenant and The Ten Commandments to the Israelites. This was the first law that was given to mankind that was written by the very finger of God.

Also, we Jesus fasted in the Wilderness for forty days. Then His earthly ministry started. You can see in both cases, there is a huge spiritual responsibility and task before each individual. I wish that every Pastor, before their ordination by men and taking the office, would do this fast. I know very few people who have done this fast with water, therefore, please consult your doctor before you decide to start a 40 day or any fast. BUT obey God above all.

Exodus 34:28

Moses was there with the LORD forty days and forty nights without eating bread or drinking water. And he wrote on the tablets the words of the covenant-the Ten Commandments.

3) Daniel Fast: Abstaining from certain foods for a period of time such as luxury foods. Or this can be solely a juice fast or liquid fast.  Daniel fasted for 21 days on vegetables. He had no processed carbs, juices, no coffee, no sweets! No choice food means, you do not eat anything pleasurable. You can eat grains but no overeating. The purpose of this fast is self-discipline thereby, denying self-indulgence. This includes avoiding luxury restaurants. You need to be careful with this fast because a lot of people eat too much beans and heavy protein and high carb vegetables. Remember you cannot trick God. It has to be a sacrifice.

Daniel 10:2-7

“At that time, I, Daniel, mourned for three weeks. I ate no choice food; no meat or wine touched my lips; and I used no lotions at all until the three weeks were over. On the twenty-fourth day of the first month, as I was standing on the bank of the great river, the Tigris, I looked up and there before me was a man dressed in linen, with a belt of fine gold from Uphaz around his waist. His body was like topaz, his face like lightning, his eyes like flaming torches, his arms and legs like the gleam of burnished bronze, and his voice like the sound of a multitude. I, Daniel, was the only one who saw the vision; those who were with me did not see it, but such terror overwhelmed them that they fled and hid themselves.

Daniel 10: 11-12

He said, “Daniel, you who are highly esteemed, consider carefully the words I am about to speak to you, and stand up, for I have now been sent to you.” And when he said this to me, I stood up trembling. Then he continued, “Do not be afraid, Daniel. Since the first day that you set your mind to gain understanding and to humble yourself before your God, your words were heard, and I have come in response to them.”

4) Fasting from Indulgences: As Christians, we may listen to the leading of the Holy Spirit. God may speak to us individually for anything that He wants us to sacrifice for a period of time. This can be fasting from many things such as coffee, deserts, TV (I suggest anyone who is fasting to cut their cords with TV and social media and smart phones. It will increase the benefits of fasting.) Fasting from shopping and being online all the time. I usually fast at least a couple of days a week having only one meal a day. I fast through the breakfast and a lunch and eat dinner only. If you would like to start training your body for a long fast, this may be the best starting point for you.

SOME FASTING TIPS:

I encourage you to consult a doctor, but obey God first.

Pray first. Not your will, but let God’s will be fulfilled in your life.

Humble yourself and have an attitude of “surrender”. Fasting doesn’t make us better than someone who doesn’t fast. Don’t let religious pride sneak in. Fasting is for our good and benefits our relationship with God. It gives us a new perspective when we are not seeking to please and indulge our flesh.

Prepare your schedule for more quiet times with the Lord and longer Bible studies and devotionals. You will be surprised at how much you start hear from God during the fasting. Through fasting your spiritual hearing disabilities may be gone.

Fasting should be done secretly, but I let my family and friends know if I am on a long fast for two reasons: 1) For them to support me and pray for me during this time. I ask them to not offer me food (“Please don’t tempt policy”). 2) Another reason I tell people is so that those who are close to me don’t get offended if I don’t accept their invitations to any events that involve food. I believe as long as you are not announcing and bragging about your fasting it is ok to ask for support. Always check the motivation of your heart. Fasting has to humble us; we have to not feel superior to others who are not fasting.

Quiet all the voices that will come against fasting. I cut down unnecessary texting at least 70%. And I can’t tell you what a difference it has made in my life. I became more productive and have more time for my family and for the Lord. I suggest that you do the same, at least while you are fasting.

The enemy will bring many oppositions! Please know that you may have temporary headaches, sleeping disorders, bad breath, moodiness, and/or black outs (walk and get up slowly) at the beginning. You may even be easily irritable due to lack of sugar or carb intake. The enemy will throw anything at you to make you quit. He will tempt you in any way. Be mentally prepared to face many temptations to make you break your fast. In the past, the enemy would try to put a fear in my heart and mind that I was going to have a heart attack while fasting. Remember, he is the father of all lies, as Jesus called him. Please be prepared and be very mindful of him using people to hurt your fast.

I suggest for you not to go to any special event where there is food. Why? Because the first three days of fasting are especially difficult. After that three-day mark, you typically don’t look for food. After seven days, your body generally adjusts and you will not be easily tempted.

Quiet your surroundings, at least at the beginning of your fast. The more stressed you become, the more likely you will look for comfort in food. I have been there. I have broken fasts while under huge pressure. I am telling you this so that you understand that this is a journey. We fail and then we get up and try again until we conquer. Our God is merciful!

Also, consider going on a shorter fast to train your body before you go on a radical fast such as a 40 day fast. For example, you can do a juice fast if you have never fasted before (where you only drink healthy juices as a substitute for your usual meals). Then you can go on a seven-day water fast. Then you seek the Lord to fast longer. Work your way up. But again, if God is calling you, you have to obey Him and He will sustain you.

During the fast, DO NOT gossip (we shouldn’t gossip anyway) and quarrel or fight. DO GOOD to others; Defend the oppressed and fatherless.

According to Isaiah 58:2-12 NIV:

“For day after day they seek me out; they seem eager to know my ways, as if they were a nation that does what is right and has not forsaken the commands of its God. They ask me for just decisions and seem eager for God to come near them. ‘Why have we fasted,’ they say, ‘and you have not seen it? Why have we humbled ourselves, and you have not noticed?’ “Yet on the day of your fasting, you do as you please and exploit all your workers. Your fasting ends in quarreling and strife, and in striking each other with wicked fists. You cannot fast as you do today and expect your voice to be heard on high. Is this the kind of fast I have chosen, only a day for people to humble themselves? Is it only for bowing one’s head like a reed and for lying in sackcloth and ashes? Is that what you call a fast, a day acceptable to the Lord? “Is not this the kind of fasting I have chosen: to loose the chains of injustice and untie the cords of the yoke, to set the oppressed free and break every yoke? Is it not to share your food with the hungry and to provide the poor wanderer with shelter— when you see the naked, to clothe them, and not to turn away from your own flesh and blood? Then your light will break forth like the dawn, and your healing will quickly appear; then your righteousness will go before you, and the glory of the Lord will be your rear guard. Then you will call, and the Lord will answer; you will cry for help, and he will say: Here am I. “If you do away with the yoke of oppression, with the pointing finger and malicious talk, and if you spend yourselves in behalf of the hungry and satisfy the needs of the oppressed, then your light will rise in the darkness, and your night will become like the noonday. The Lord will guide you always; he will satisfy your needs in a sun-scorched land and will strengthen your frame. You will be like a well-watered garden, like a spring whose waters never fail. Your people will rebuild the ancient ruins and will raise up the age-old foundations; you will be called Repairer of Broken Walls, Restorer of Streets with Dwellings.”

FASTING GUIDE

(We have done this fast for 40 days, eating one meal a day. We have done a 30 day juice fast in the past, as well. You can adjust the number of days and meals as the Holy Spirit leads you.)

  • Suggested Rules and Guidelines:

-For a food fast, eat only one meal a day at 5 pm with lots of water (adjust it to the leading of the Holy Spirit and your Doctor’s recommendations).

-For a liquid fast, prepare your all-natural juice batch and simply add water to it to make it last that entire day. For smoothies, try avoiding any artificial sweeteners and use organic honey or agave nectar.

-For a Daniel fast, or a “healthy food” fast (where you are eating healthy, organic meals), make sure that your meals are properly portioned and you are spending as much time as possible with the Lord.

*Important note: Please consult your doctor or primary physician first! Consider adjusting this fast to your health condition. If you are pregnant, diabetic, struggling or have struggled with Anorexia or Bulimia, we don’t recommend that you join this fast.

*NO TV, ENTERTAINMENT and limited SOCIAL MEDIA*

Try to spend lots of time with JESUS.

  • How does it work?

  1. Eat only one meal a day at 5 pm with lots of water, or drink an all-natural juice/smoothie three times a day, or replace your usual meals with a light and healthy meal/snack (adjust it to the leading of the Holy Spirit and your Doctor’s recommendations).

  1. Drink plenty of water!

  • You can have Almond milk, coconut water, cashew milk and similar for snacks.
  • You can have chicken or beef broth for protein, but have portion control.
  • No coffee, no sodas and comfort drinks! Remember fasting is a sacrifice.
  • Replace coffee with herbal teas. Don’t use sugar or substitutes, but use a little organic honey for sweetness and energy is fine.

  1. If you would like to do a juice/liquid fast, then try to make your juices as natural as possible!

  1. Avoid food involved events to avoid temptation.

  1. Be prepared for attacks of the enemy: temptations, people coming against you and this fast, headaches, dizziness, emotional and physical weakness.

  1. Try moderate activities like walks, biking, swimming etc. If you’re exercising heavily, you can drink protein shakes. But remember these drinks are high in sugar and carbs and will make you hungrier.

  1. Humble yourself before the Lord! Seek Him diligently through prayer and reading the Word.

  1. Avoid TV and entertainment.

  1. Limit shopping.

  1. Spend quality time with Jesus through prayer (get alone or make a prayer closet if you don’t have one, and seek the Lord).

  1. Simplify your life.

  1. Spend more time in the Word (make a commitment to read the Word at a specific time everyday).

  1. Praise and Worship God more often. Start singing songs of praise around your house as you do house chores. Give Him glory and praise when you’re driving in the car. Make this your lifestyle!

  1. Adjust this fast accordingly to your health condition! Consult your doctor before this fast if your health allows you for the juice fast.

>>IMPORTANT NOTE: if you are taking a medication that requires food prior take a handful of something healthy and light (small portion) instead of the juice preferably a banana or an apple.

  1. We will break this fast together and go on a light eating for a week together!

IMPORTANCE OF FASTING

Fasting and prayer go hand in hand. It is crucial to spend more time with God than anything or anybody else. Use this time of fasting to sacrifice an activity of pleasure (e.g. Netflix, television, social media) or an item of pleasure (e.g. food) and spend that time seeking the Lord through prayer or reading the Word.

REASONS TO FAST

Fast to see your relationship with God grow deeper.

Fast for breakthrough and revival in your family and nation.

Fast for MEGA-SHIFT in your walk with Christ.

Get rid of the familiar (chaos, fighting with spouses, diseases, sickness, depression, etc.) in your life! It is time to live in the supernatural!

SCRIPTURES ABOUT PRAYER & FASTING

Matthew 6:5-7

“And when you pray, you shall not be like the hypocrites. For they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the corners of the streets, that they may be seen by men. Assuredly, I say to you, they have their reward. But you, when you pray, go into your room, and when you have shut your door, pray to your Father who is in the secret place; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you openly.[a] And when you pray, do not use vain repetitions as the heathen do. For they think that they will be heard for their many words.

Matthew 6:16-18

“Moreover, when you fast, do not be like the hypocrites, with a sad countenance. For they disfigure their faces that they may appear to men to be fasting. Assuredly, I say to you, they have their reward. 17 But you, when you fast, anoint your head and wash your face, 18 so that you do not appear to men to be fasting, but to your Father who is in the secret place; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you openly.

2 Chronicles 7:14
