Surrendering to God

We don’t always see “surrender” as a positive action, but when it comes to God, it is one of the major keys to developing a strong relationship with our Heavenly Father. He can only operate fully and pour His blessings into our lives when our eyes are constantly on Him and our hearts are fully surrendered (2 Chronicles 16:9)

What does it mean to surrender to God?

Surrendering means to submit our will and desires to God and to seek his as our own. For God says, “For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways,” (Isaiah 55:8).

Trust and surrender go hand in hand. You can’t surrender if you don’t trust God. How can you learn to trust God? Spend time with Him in prayer, in worship and read His word. Give Him your desires, plans, dreams, relationships, job and everything else!

The Holy Spirit will help you!

Sometimes it feels hard to surrender on our own, especially at first. We have our own will, desires, plans and sinful tendencies. It’s crucial that we ask for Holy Spirit’s help in dying to self. He will give us the strength and desire to surrender to our Father in Heaven.

Follow Jesus’ example: Jesus himself shows us how to surrender to our Heavenly Father, in Matthew 26:30:

Going a little farther, he fell with his face to the ground and prayed, “My Father, if it is possible, may this cup be taken from me. Yet not as I will, but as you will.”

Benefits of surrendering to God:

  • Freedom: You gain true freedom in the surrendering. As Jesus said in Luke 9:24: “For whoever wants to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for me will save it.”
  • Peace: Anxiety & fear leave. Peace remains.

Prayer of Surrender:

Dear Lord Jesus, I humbly come before you now. I repent for taking things into my own hands and for not trusting you. I believe that your ways are higher than my ways and your thoughts are higher than my thoughts. I believe that you have the best in store for me.

I surrender everything to you, Lord Jesus. I am yours. Come and have your way in my life. In Jesus’ name. I invite your Holy presence into my life circumstances. I trust that you have the solutions I needs. Help me, Holy Spirit, to surrender daily to the Father’s will. Lead me and guide me. Not my will, but your will be done, Jesus. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.
