Who is Holy Spirit?

Holy Spirit is the third person of the Godhead, or simply He is the part of Godhead that is with us here on earth. When Jesus was getting ready to return to heaven after His death and resurrection, He told His followers in John 14:26, “But the helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, He will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you.” Holy Spirit lives in every believer. When we surrender our lives to God and receive salvation, our spirit man becomes new. Ezekiel 36:26-27 says, “And I will give you a new heart, and a new spirit I will put within you. And I will remove that heart of stone from your flesh and give you a heart of flesh. And I will put my Spirit within you, and cause you to walk in my statutes and be careful to obey my rules.”

A change happens when we become saved. Holy Spirit begins the transformation process in us that takes us from a lost sinner to a believer that begins to look and smell like Jesus to the world. Our thinking becomes revolutionized. John 16:13 tells us, “When the Spirit of truth comes, He will guide you into all truth, for He will not speak on His own authority, but whatever He hears He will speak, and He will declare to you the things that are to come.”

The Bible reveals that Holy Spirit is multifaceted. He is full of power. The Bible talks about the time of earth’s creation where Holy Spirit hovered over the dark void before God’s creative order was released. In Acts 1:8 it says, “But you will receive power after the Holy Spirit comes upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all of Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.” In 1 Corinthians 2:4 Paul said, “and my speech and my preaching was not with enticing words of man’s wisdom, but in demonstration of the Spirit and power.”

Holy Spirit can also has emotions. Ephesians 4:30 tells us He can be grieved. “Do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption.” Hebrews 10:29 tells us He can be insulted. “How much more severely do you think someone deserves to be punished who has trampled the Son of God underfoot, who has treated as an unholy thing the blood of the covenant that sanctified them, and who has insulted the Spirit of grace?”

Holy Spirit is a comforter, healer, teacher and friend. He is the friend who sticks closer that a brother, Proverbs 18:24. He is the Spirit of Wisdom, according to Luke 10:21. He will never leave us or forsake us. The more that we welcome His Presence, the more He will reveal Himself to us. Holy Spirit is a gift to us. May we give Him the honor that He deserves.
