Help for Loneliness

How awful it can be to feel alone. To sense that no one cares. These feelings can lead to despair and feelings of hopelessness. The impact of these feelings can be far-reaching. They can affect much more than just our attitudes. In fact, loneliness actually has a physical impact.

Recent research published by the American Psychological Association revealed that people who felt lonely were more likely to get sick. In particular, loneliness makes us more vulnerable to the common cold. But the impact wasn’t limited to moments when we’re away from people. In fact, even in a crowded room, loneliness can occur. 

Believers are not immune from feelings of loneliness. We can feel isolated from friends and family. Even in the midst of a group of people, we still can feel ignored and deserted.

If this happens, the Bible reminds us of steps we should take. First, we are to remember that we are never alone. God is always with us. As Jesus promised, the Father gave us the Holy Spirit to be our Comforter and to be with us forever (John 14:16).

His constant presence means that we can always fellowship with Him. We can talk with Him, and share our concerns and thoughts. Our lives are enriched and our attitudes change when we fill our hearts and minds with His Word and declare His promises. Pray and talk with Him.

The Bible reminds us of the importance of being connected with others in the Body of Christ. We are not to “neglect our meeting together” (Hebrews 10:25).

As you fellowship with God, let Him fill your life with meaning. Never forget that He wants you to be healthy and prosperous (3 John 2). He promised never to leave you nor forsake you (Hebrews 13:5). He is with you always, in every circumstance.
