You Resemble Your Heavenly Father

Written by Kat W.

As I was praying, the Lord reminded me of the uniqueness of mankind. There is nothing like us on this earth. You were created in God’s image. The Creator of the whole universe created you in His very image, His likeness.

Having the “image” or “likeness” of God means that you were made to resemble God. For instance, having the ability to reason and choose, this is a reflection of God’s freedom and wisdom. Humanity was originally created in righteousness and perfect innocence, as a reflection of God’s holiness. You were created for fellowship, a reflection of God’s love and true nature.

Part of being made in God’s image is that Adam and Eve had the ability to make free choices. Although they were given a righteous nature, they made an evil choice to rebel against God, which resulted in separation. They disfigured the image of God within themselves and passed that damaged likeness down (Romans 5:12). Today, we still bear the image of God, but we also bear the scars of sin. Mentally, morally, socially, and physically, we show the effects of sin.

The good news! At salvation, God begins to restore His original image back to the individual, creating a new self, created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness” (Ephesians 4:24). That redemption happens only by God’s grace through faith in Jesus Christ as our Savior from the sin that separates us from God (Ephesians 2:8-9). Through Christ, we are made new creations in the likeness of God (2 Corinthians 5:17).

You might be reading this and feeling like your not walking out your true identity as a child of God. You feel stuck in this continual cycle of sin, that nothing is really changing in your life and even in your heart (trust me I’ve been there, I understand). For something new to begin, something old has to die. In order to walk out in your true identity you must surrender your old self to God. By doing so,you give Him access to mold your heart into His. This should be your desire: to have a heart like God.

The world has an effect on our identities as well. Instead of asking the question “who are you?”, you need to ask yourself “whose are you?”. Are you the world’s? Are you God’s? Or maybe “Are you your own God? What you do flows from who you are. I believe that we must be constantly growing. God didn’t create us to be robots, He wants us to do things out of desire. Not because He told us too, but because we want to love Him, praise Him, and Testify to His goodness. God is so worthy of your praise, and of your life, because He created you!

Pray This With Me Today: Heavenly Father I just come before you willing to walk out in my true identity as your child. I am sorry for believing in lies about myself that are not true, help me see myself the way you see me. It is You that created me and it is in You my identity comes from. Thank you for your sovereignty and goodness. Guide me in your ways and give me a hunger to seek you more. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
