glory-of-god

What is the Glory of God?

What does the Bible tell us about the Glory of God? How can we describe the glory? The Glory of God is sometimes described as His manifest presence. His glory is overwhelming, containing the holiness, power and the brilliance and radiance of God.

David wrote about the glory in the Psalms. Psalm 19:1 tells us that the heavens declare the glory of God. Psalm 63:2 says, “Thus I have seen You in the sanctuary, to see Your Power and Your glory.” Isaiah 60:1-2 says, “Arise, shine; for your light has come, and the glory of the Lord has risen upon you. For behold, darkness will cover the earth, and deep darkness the peoples. But the Lord will rise upon you and His glory will appear upon you.” This tells us that His glory can been seen, or perceived in the earth realm. Isaiah 6:3 tells us, “And one called out to another and said, “Holy, holy, holy, is the Lord of hosts, the whole earth is full of His glory.” Habakkuk 2:14 says, “For the earth will be filled with the knowledge of the glory of the Lord, as the waters cover the sea.”  We cannot read these scriptures and not realize that God’s glory was made to manifest around us. But how do we know when we have encountered the glory of God?

Moses led the Israelites by following the cloud of God’s glory. It would rest on the mountaintops and fill the tabernacle. In Exodus 40:35, scripture tells us that Moses was unable to even enter the tabernacle of meeting, because the glory cloud rested above it, and the glory of the Lord filled the tabernacle. In Exodus 24, the sight of the glory appeared as a consuming fire on top of the mountain. As Moses met with God on the mountain, his face began to radiate the glory of God. Exodus 34:29-35 tells us that after he came down from the mountain, he had to cover his face because the radiance that came from his face made the people afraid.

The glory of God is brilliant and evident to all. It cannot be hidden or disguised. Revelation 21:11 says “having the glory of God, her brilliance was like a very costly stone, as a stone of crystal-clear jasper.”

The glory of God will change the very atmosphere and change everything in it that He desires. We may not be able to see the glory with our natural eyes, but once the glory comes, we cannot deny that God has been with us. His glory is unmistakable.
