Freedom from Darkness

Light vs. Darkness is what I want to focus on this week. We have all experienced darkness in some way or another. Darkness takes on many forms and can look different for everyone. Whether it is depression itself, a bad day, a season of pain you’re going through, your negative thought pattern, poor living circumstances, or anything else really, God still wants you (His child) to be set free.

The key thing we need to understand in overcoming darkness is acknowledging the darkness itself and figuring out why it’s there. You see, dear friend, we were all born into a fallen world. What that means is everything is broken in one way or another, including us. In this new life that we receive from Jesus, we are made complete and whole in God again. God’s original purpose for mankind was for us to be in relationship with Him. It is impossible for broken people to come in relationship with a perfect and Holy God. Our God loves us so much that He made a way! The moment that we accept Jesus as our Lord and Savior is the moment we receive being made complete in Him.

Darkness will always be there, but it is our choice to turn on the light. Jesus is the light of the world (John 8:12) and when we invite Him into our lives, He is in us, and because He is in us, we now carry that light within ourselves. We need to be aware if we are or are not intentionally turning on the light that God gave us. Let go of darkness and let God in! As believers, we have the power of making the decision to let God shine in our darkness.

Choosing to let God shine in your darkness looks as simple as calling out to Him and to see things through His perspective. Once we see the situation through God’s eyes, we can see what is really going on. A surgeon cannot do heart surgery in the dark, in the same way we need to allow God in to shine in the darkest parts of our hearts so that He can begin to work in us. He is such a good God that He promises to walk with us through this journey called life, and he will never leave nor forsake us (Hebrews 13:6).

I encourage you to open up, ask God to shine in your darkness, and allow Him to bring healing to you. It’s not going to be easy at first; it’s like cleaning out a dirty wound, but at the end it heals. God wants you to have freedom today. Proclaim your freedom in Christ over your life and the light that you carry because He is in you.

Dear friend, please pray this prayer aloud with me today: God I invite you to come into my darkness and shine your light. Heal me from my emotional, mental, and physical wounds. Show me what needs to change inside of me. Fill me with your love, peace, and strength. Give me the courage to walk in healing through you. Remind me of your perfect love and how you see me. God, I trust you and I thank you for making a way for me to have freedom today. In Jesus name. Amen.
