The Gift

In many cultures, there is an exchange of gifts between a man and a woman who love each other and plan to marry.  These gifts serve as a promise and guarantee of commitment to one another.

When you and I believe and receive Jesus Christ as our personal Savior, we receive a gift …the gift of the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit is God’s promise and guarantee that we will live forever with Him. The Holy Spirit confirms that we are children of God.

We first desired to know Jesus because of the Holy Spirit, who revealed our sin and our need for forgiveness.  He was a witness to us that Jesus was God’s Son, who died on the cross for our sins, was buried, and was brought to life on the third day. The Holy Spirit convicts people of sin and shows them their need for a Savior.  Once we realize this need and decide to follow Christ, the Holy Spirit comes to live within us at the moment of our decision. The Holy Spirit is there to help us live a life dedicated to Christ.

After Jesus rose from the dead, He met with His Disciples and assured them that when He returned to the Father, God would send them the Helper, the Spirit of Truth. The Holy Spirit is a person, joined with God the Father and God the Son and is our Helper here on earth.

Jesus said, “But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and remind you of everything that I have told you.” (John 14:26)

“When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all truth. He will not speak on his own but will tell you what he has heard. He will tell you about the future. “(John 16:13)

The Holy Spirit teaches and guides us as we follow Christ.  The Spirit empowers us to live an abundant and victorious life here on earth. The Holy Spirit works in our lives to produce God’s character in us: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control (Galatians 5:22-23). He helps us understand the truth of God’s Word,  giving us wisdom, understanding, and instruction. The Holy Spirit is our promise and guarantee of Eternal Life,  gifted to us from our Heavenly Father.
