What is Warfare Prayer?

Warfare prayer is a strategy God has given us to defeat our spiritual enemies. Spiritual enemies are those that are not human, or flesh and blood, but those that reside in the spiritual, unseen realm. Ephesians 6:12 says that we do not wrestle with flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the powers, against the world forces of this present darkness, and against the spiritual forces of wickedness in the places. Because our enemy is not human, we cannot fight with human weapons.

Our enemy, the devil, and his demonic hordes attack us with fiery darts, but not physical ones. Fiery darts are words, curses, and images that come against our mind, will, and emotions. These attacks may also affect our bodies, but they are not from physical weapons. The enemy desires us to come into agreement with his lies and deception, and therefore cause us to receive the injury from his realm.

How can we guard against these attacks? One way is to put on our spiritual armor as referred to in Ephesians 6. God has given us His armor to help us to stand and resist the enemy. But we can also use the word of God, which is the sword of the spirit, in warfare prayer. This is an offensive weapon used to silence our enemy. As the devil roams about seeking to devour and defeat us, our declarations of the word of God become like a sword against him. As we align with heaven with our prayers, angelic help is released to come and war in the spirit realm on our behalf. We engage our angels by wielding the word of God, as we are directed by Holy Spirit. God knows what declarations and prayers will defeat the enemy. As we partner with Him, we are sure to see the battle won.

Using warfare prayer is a strategy that we must employ if we want our enemies defeated. Not engaging in battle is simply not an option for Christians. Satan will not ignore or overlook us once we belong to God. We automatically become Satan’s enemy. Therefore, it is crucial that we know our weapons and the strategy of heaven if we want to live a victorious life in Christ.
