How to be a Free Thinker: Put on the mind of Christ!

What does it mean to have the mind of Christ? We have access to the mind of Christ when we become followers of Jesus Christ. As we submit our lives to Him, we become connected to the mind of Christ. To have the mind of Christ means that we can think higher thoughts- God thoughts. Colossians 3:2 says, “Set your mind on things above, not on things on the earth.” Our perspective becomes different when we think as God thinks. We see things from an eternal perspective.

Having the mind of Christ means that we can choose the God way of life. We are not limited by a carnal mind any longer. We can consider choices that will affect eternity and have the inner strength to choose wisely, because we have access to the eternal wisdom of God. 1 Peter 1:13 tells us to gird up the loins of our mind, be sober, and to rest our hope fully upon the grace that is to be brought to us at the revelation of Jesus Christ. We can make Godly decisions if we choose God’s way.

We have access to eternal truth as a believer- not the world’s truth, or our own truth. Truth as revealed in God’s word. As we feed on the word of God and allow this truth to permeate and saturate our thinking, our minds will begin to change and receive truth. Romans 12:2 tells us how we do this. “Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.”

Applying the mind of Christ to our way of thinking means that we do not allow just any thoughts to fill our minds. Doing so will only take us down a wrong path. God instructs us to manage our thoughts well. Philippians 4:8-9 says, “And now dear brothers and sisters, one final thing. Fix your thoughts on what is true, and honorable, and right, and pure, and lovely, and admirable. Think about things that are excellent and worthy of praise. Keep putting into practice all you have learned and received.” Following these instructions will keep us aligned with the mind of Christ. It is with the mind of Christ that we will see the kingdom of God.
